About Stout Heart Press#

Stout Heart Press Logo

Stout Heart Press has emerged out of a deep appreciation for the analog and for the community of printers who have welcomed me into the craft.#

2023#

At some point during the Summer of 2023 I bought a pack of pink pearl erasers to play with a vintage linocut tool from the thrift store. With some watercolor paper and a black stamp pad, I began making cards with repeating patterns.

I made my first press - like a giant tortilla press, made with two Ikea cutting boards and a few hinges. It worked surprisingly well for a few linocuts, but eventually the lever I made wore out.

2024#

I began my Library Science graduate program at the University of Michigan in the Fall of 2024, at which point I discovered the Book Arts Studio on campus. I began working with moveable type and large proofing presses, learning from Ann Arbor printer and wood engraver, Jim Horton.

2025#

By the middle of my graduate program, book binding, letterpress, and linocut printing became ways of taking care of myself. I loved working with printmaking-centered collections in the archives I worked in on campus.

2026#

Over the past year I have spent as much time as possible working in the studio, have taught several letterpress classes and tutored individual students working on book binding projects.
